J ul 1 99 6 Statistics of Mesoscopic Fluctuations of Quantum Capacitance

چکیده
The Thouless formula G = (e 2 /h)(E c /∆) for the two-probe dc con-ductance G of a d-dimensional mesoscopic cube is re-analysed to relate its quantum capacitance C Q to the reciprocal of the level spacing ∆. To this end, the escape timescale τ occurring in the Thouless correlation energy E c = ¯ h/τ is interpreted as the time constant τ = RC Q with RG ≡ 1, giving at once C Q = (e 2 /2π∆). Thus, the statistics of the quantum capac-itance is directly related to that of the level spacing, which is well known from the Random Matrix Theory for all the three universality classes of statistical ensembles. The basic questions of how intrinsic this quantum capacitance can arise purely quantum-resistively, and of its observabil-ity visa -vis the external geometric capacitance that combines with it in series, are discussed.

(Received) We consider mesoscopic non-superconducting rings with an effective capacitance. We propose a Hamiltonian model describing magnetic flux in such rings. Next we incorporate dissipation and thermal fluctuations into our kinetic model. We consider kinetics in limiting regimes of strong and weak coupling to thermal bath.

We consider quantum fluctuations of current in a metallic loop induced by varying magnetic flux. The dependence of the fluctuations on the flux change Φ contains a logarithmically divergent term periodic in Φ with the period Φ 0 = hc/e. The fluctuation is smallest near Φ = nΦ 0. The divergence is explained by a comparison with the orthogonality catastrophe problem. The Φ 0 −periodicity is relat...
متن کاملMesoscopic Josephson Effect
In the classical Josephson effect the phase difference across the junction is well defined, and the supercurrent is reduced only weakly by phase diffusion. For mesoscopic junctions with small capacitance the phase undergoes large quantum fluctuations, and the current is also decreased by Coulomb blockade effects. We discuss the behavior of the current-voltage characteristics in a large range of...

We show an equivalence between the approach of Buttiker and the Fermi quantum stochastic calculus for mesoscopic systems. To illustrate the method we derive the current fluctuations in a two terminal mesoscopic circuit with two tunnel barriers containing a single quasi bound state on the well. The method enables us to focus on either the incoming/outgoing Fermi fields in the leads, or on the ir...

We argue, physically and formally, that existing diffusive models of noise do not yield a faithful microscopic description of nonequilibrum current fluctuations. The theoretical deficit becomes more evident in quantum-confined metallic systems, such as the two-dimensional electron gas. In such systems we propose a specific experimental test of mesoscopic validity for diffusive theory’s central ...
